Everton FC, an English Premier League club, has responded to a league body allegation that it violated Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

Everton, who are currently 15th in the league table, two points above relegation, issued a statement on Friday evening emphasizing that the club did not violate the FFP rules.

The announcement comes less than an hour after the Premier League announced that the Merseyside-based club had been referred to an independent commission for alleged rule violations.

The Premier League stated in the statement that the club violated the rules during the 2021-2022 season but did not elaborate on how they did so.

Everton, who have consistently announced financial losses in recent seasons, responded quickly, stressing that they did not commit any crime and are prepared to defend themselves.

Everton’s statement read:

The club strongly contests the allegation of non-compliance and together with its independent team of experts is entirely confident that it remains compliant with all financial rules and regulations.

The club has, over several years, provided information to the Premier League openly and transparently and has consciously chosen to act with the utmost good faith at all times.

It should be noted that the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules are a set of regulations established to prevent professional football clubs from spending more than they earn in pursuit of success, thereby avoiding financial problems that could threaten their long-term survival.
